Samsung attacks Apple’s iPhone 12 with the Galaxy Z Fold 2: what good is the new flip phone?

For all those who have gotten bored with the iPhone, there is now Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 2. However, the high-tech device isn’t exactly cheap.

Wow! It turned out to be a really nice smartphone. Why is it surprising? Well, Samsung’s first attempt at folding a mobile phone ended a year ago in a longer device
recalled a prototype of a production model. The folding mechanism was a wobbly hinge, the external screen too small and too much plastic everywhere.

The Galaxy Z Fold 2 now looks like a classy smartphone: sleek aluminum casing, nearly borderless screens, sleek workmanship. On the external screen you can use apps like
even on any other mobile. If you want to use it as a mini-tablet, open the device like a book and it comes – ta-da! – a large screen appears. Alright then? Not exactly.

Even Samsung cannot overcome physics: a foldable mobile phone is often twice the size of a regular smartphone. It’s frustrating.

Especially since Samsung has not yet managed to perfectly position the two internal screens on top of each other when folded. So there is a distance of over a millimeter. Not only does it look ugly, but it makes the device even thicker.

Huawei’s Chinese engineers can do it better, as they demonstrated with the Mate Xs. However, due to the trade dispute, there are no more Google apps for it, which makes it unusable. If you want to turn your mobile phone into a tablet, you can hardly avoid the Fold 2.
