Ripple presents History Sharding for the rippled version 0.90.0, solves problems related to historical data of XRP Ledger

On Wednesday, October 31, Ripple introduced History Sharding on the choppy version 0.90.0. The feature allows individual Ripple servers to store historical data without having to store the entire history. This will reduce data storage needs for these servers, which can currently exceed eight terabytes. The sharding function will not replace an ledger archive. The introduction of this functionality by Ripple could be a step towards downsizing the blockchain and achieving better results as the number of transactions on the network increases.

Manage data in growing Blockchain

As blockchains are adopted slowly by individual users and businesses, the size of the network is constantly growing. Users responsible for managing the network on the XRP register, however, must store more than 8 terabytes of data to store their complete history. Because each server needs to dedicate huge resources to storing the XRP log history, the problem may soon fade and possibly interfere with the efficiency of the blockchain.

To counteract these problems before they catch on, Ripple introduced story sharing. The company announced in a recent blog post:

"The history sharding feature, enabled in the choppy version 0.90.0, solves this problem by distributing the history in segments called shards.A fragment contains all the data for a series of master books. rippled servers can contribute to storing historical data without having to store the entire history. "

How does Sharding work?

Instead of replacing the ledger store, sharding creates a path that connects directly to the Ledger XRP network. Thus, the history of the entire network remains intact while the servers only accept storing the fragments. The servers confirm "who have all the data they have agreed to maintain and produce test trees or deltas of the register".

The fragments stored by a server are selected randomly while a normal distribution curve stores the complete history of the master books. This allows the network to keep the history uniform.
