Israeli researchers have demonstrated the positive effects of hyperbaric medicine in delaying aging. This treatment made it possible to increase the length of telomeres, parts of the DNA, the shortening of which is linked to senescence. This Tel Aviv University study was published in Aging.

According to a study published in the journal Aging, Israeli researchers were able for the first time to curb the aging of the human immune system using hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT).

This method allows you to lengthen telomeres, parts of DNA, the shortening of which is associated with biological aging. Additionally, hyperbaric oxygen therapy strengthens the body’s ability to get rid of damaged cells.

To conduct this study, researchers from Tel Aviv University involved 35 people over the age of 64, in good health and living independently. The volunteers underwent 60 daily sessions of hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

Blood samples were taken from them at the 30th and 60th sessions and one to two weeks after the end of treatment. The length and obvious signs of aging of the telomeres present in their mononuclear cells, especially the immune cells, were analyzed.

Positive effect

Their research results show that the telomere length of various immune cells, including helper and cytotoxic T lymphocytes called “natural killers” and B, increased significantly by more than 20%.

The most significant change was observed in B cells, which increased in length by approximately 26% after the 30th session and by 29.4% after the 60th session. This figure was revised upwards after treatment to reach 37.63%.

The length of telomeres at the end of a chromosome, which measures between four and 15 kilobases, gradually shortens by about 20 to 40 bases per year. It is associated with various diseases, poor physical performance and cortical thinning of the brain. When their shortening reaches a critical level, cells cannot replicate and progress towards senescence or programmed cell death.
