Bernhard Langer makes a historic appearance at the US Masters. At the age of 63, the best German golfer shows his class again and creates something no one has ever achieved before. Tiger Woods, on the other hand, is having a day of horror.
Bernhard Langer literally floated on the Augusta National Golf Club green when his art stroke was completed. Full of euphoria, the record holder threw the cap into the air after spectacularly maneuvering the white ball into the hole from about 20 meters – even four-time senior champion Rory McIlroy was stunned with disbelief. For Langer it was the next highlight of what was a historic US Masters for him, finishing with a 71 round and a total of 285 hits in the top 40.
On his 37th appearance at Magnolia Lane, the old man once again delighted the world of golf and provided the next success story of his unique career, with a special record. As the oldest player in the history of the legendary tournament, the 63-year-old made the cut. That meant a lot to him and it was definitely an achievement, the resident said modestly: “I hope I can play for a few more years and enjoy this place.”
The tournament is not a fountain of youth
American Tommy Aaron had set the previous age record as a participant in the second half of the tournament in 2000 (63 years, one month and 16 days). Two-time Masters Champion Langer has an extra month and day. “We should have a toast,” he said, exhausted but beaming in the televised interview that followed.
Langer definitely earned a drink or two, after all, he has stolen the show from his younger colleagues multiple times. Langer had already impressed the competition in the first round when he came to the top of the clubhouse with two bogeys but six birdies on hand. He last scored a 68 at the start in Augusta in 1993, on the way to his second Masters success after his first win in 1985.
“Making the cut would be a huge success at my age,” Langer said in an interview with SID before the tournament. But the tournament is not a fountain of youth for him. “In fact, I feel older when I play guys and see how far they hit and how short they hit,” he joked.
Tiger Woods ends up ruining everything
However, there were long faces with two top US stars. Last year’s winner Tiger Woods faltered in the deciding round after starting with a personal best on Thursday. The negative highlight on Sunday were the ten hits on hole 12, a par 3. With that, the tiger slipped back into the lower realms of the leaderboard.
Co-favorite and US Open champion Bryson DeChambeau, who was obviously in poor health, also did not play the role he expected, and in the end it was even a worse shot (286 shots) than flight mate Langer. Unimpressed by the hustle and bustle of the favorites, he proved that thanks to his vast experience he can still keep up with the best in the world.
Next year he wants to make his mark again in Augusta: despite countless successes in over four decades, his latest shirt is not yet in sight. “I will definitely play a few more years,” he said. “We hope he will never be completely without golf.” Thanks to his victories in 1985 and 1993, he has the lifelong eligibility to play in Augusta.
