Manchester City do it, Liverpool don’t: the jump in the last sixteen of the Champions League. Real Madrid meanwhile remain on the trail of Borussia Mönchengladbach, while Bayern opponents Atlético Madrid allow themselves a slip.
Apart from reigning champions Bayern Munich, only Manchester City have qualified for the round of 16 of the Champions League before the last two rounds of the group stage. England champions Liverpool FC, however, lost their first chance to enter the top 16 group. Chelsea FC, FC Barcelona, Juventus Turin and FC Sevilla had already qualified for the knockout stages on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Liverpool have lost their first chance to reach the Group D round of 16 with an unexpected 0-2 (0-0) home defeat to Atalanta Bergamo. The team of German team manager Jürgen Klopp had to give up points for the first time against the Italians. The decision in favor of the guests was taken by national team player Robin Gosens (64th) after Josip Ilicic’s from Bergamo (60th). Ajax Amsterdam took advantage of the Reds’ slip and, with a 3-1 (0-0) win over FC Midtjylland, were on par with Bergamo close to the English champions, who are just two points advantage over the chasing couple.
In Group B Borussia Mönchengladbach, record-winning Real Madrid maintained close contact with the Rhenish leaders by winning 2-0 (0-0) at Inter. Eden Hazard (7th, penalty foul) and an own goal by former Dortmund Achraf Hakimi (59th) greatly improved the royal team’s starting position around national player Toni Kroos for the final shot. Former Munich Arturo Vidal had to leave the pitch after 33 minutes with the Giallorossi.
On the other hand, in group A in Munich, the race for second place is still open. Atlético Madrid missed a preliminary decision in their favor with a zero against Lokomotiv Moscow, so that even the last RB Salzburg could theoretically advance.
Manchester City kept a clean slate in Group C with international İlkay Gündoğan with a 1-0 (1-0) win at Olympiacos and made it clear with the group’s fourth win. Thanks to the success at Hellas after a goal by young star Phil Foden (36th), the team of start coach Pep Guardiola has already secured a place in the group of the best 16. Behind the Citizens, former title winners FC Porto after the 2-0 (1-0) success at Olympique Marseille, one point more is enough to access the round of 16.
