Real Madrid got a good starting position in the group stage of the Champions League. After the victory, Real are second behind Gladbach with seven points, Inter remain last in Group B. After six defeats and two draws, it was the Blancos’ first victory against the Italians.

Real had only obtained four points in the first three games of this Champions League, Inter even two fewer. The game was therefore important for possible progress.

The importance was evident to the players in the first few minutes. Safety passes were the method of choice on both sides. Inter then made the first mistake in the person of Nicolò Barella. The midfielder made Nacho fall unnecessarily in the penalty area (5th minute of play).

Inter wants penalties and loses Vidal

With Sergio Ramos injured, Eden Hazard started. The Belgian transforms with a shot placed halfway up on the right (7th). Real pressed for a second goal. Lucas Vázquez hits the post (13th), nearly three minutes later Ferland Mendy made a bad decision when he tried again to cross from a good position.

The Italians called for penalties just over half an hour after Raphael Varane lightly touched Arturo Vidal’s foot in the penalty area. When referee Anthony Taylor didn’t decide on a penalty, Vidal complained loudly and received a yellow card. As he got very close to Taylor, the Chilean had to leave the field with the Giallorossi (33rd).

Conte inserts Ivan Perisic and Danilo D’Ambrosio in the second half and goes from full-back to four defensive. Despite the deficit, Italians were low and hoped for opposite or standard opportunities. After a free kick in the 52nd minute, Milan asked for another penalty. Vázquez had held Roberto Gagliardini in his own penalty area. Again there were no sanctions: this decision was more controversial.

When Rodrygo flew 2-0 after a cross from the right with his first contact with the ball, the game was decided.

With a fourth win in as many games, Liverpool could have made the round of 16 perfect early. Jürgen Klopp and his team did not have a large number of regular players due to the many injured players and the good starting position. Among other things, Joel Matip played defense alongside newcomer Kostas Tsimikas and 19-year-old Rhys and Neco Williams.

It quickly became clear that the Reds are not well prepared in this formation. After just four minutes, a bad pass from Mohamed Salah gave Atalanta their first chance. However, Josip Ilicic did not use it. While Robin Gosens (9th) and Alejandro Gómez (11th) lost other good chances, Liverpool only got their first chance in the 45th minute. Salah was aiming a little too high.

After the break, it was Ilicic who scored Liverpool’s first Champions League goal this season. After a cross from Gómez, he grabbed the ball from four meters over the line (60th). Klopp made four changes immediately after conceding the goal. Before this measure could go into effect, Gosens scored 2-0 (64th). Gómez previously had plenty of space and time for a cross.

Over the remainder of the season, Liverpool failed to create high profile scoring opportunities. With nine points, the English champions are still in first place in Group D, Atalanta are third with seven points, tied with Ajax Amsterdam.
