- Stan Wawrinka (ATP 20) fails to beat Alexander Zverev (ATP 7) on his fourth attempt and is eliminated from the quarter-finals of the ATP 1000 Paris-Bercy tournament.
- For Lausanne, the season ends after a 3: 6, 6: 7 (1: 7) defeat against the German.
- Zverev will now meet world number two Rafael Nadal in the semifinals.
It was once again a Stan Wawrinka game, where more would have been needed for the Swiss. Especially since Alexander Zverev did not seem in top form and, especially in the initial phase, he repeatedly touched his left thigh. But for Wawrinka it was once again a match of missed opportunities.
3 breaks in the first set
In the first round, Lausanne just didn’t find the rhythm. He immediately reacts to the break for 2: 3, but with 2 more service losses, the set for the world number 20 is over. Zverev was particularly convincing with his serve: over 80% of the first attempts ended up on the pitch, in 75% of cases he hit the point.
Wawrinka serves by winning the 2nd set
In the second deal, Wawrinka managed to improve but failed to get rid of his inconsistency. A game full of variations and big points alternating again and again with inexplicable and inevitable errors. This was also the case where Wawrinka was able to serve with a score of 5: 4 to win the second set. Wawrinka was on the trigger and led 30: 0 before having to give up 4 points in a row and then conceded the re-break at 5: 5.
Zverev got 3 games in a row, so the tiebreak had to decide. And this became a clear argument in favor of the 23-year-old German. Wawrinka suffered 2 mini breaks in a row at the start and quickly found himself trailing 0: 5.
Zverev now against Nadal
Zverev thus kept the upper hand in the 4th duel against Wawrinka. In St. Petersburg (2016), Miami (2017) and at this year’s Australian Open, Wawrinka has always managed to win a set.
In the semifinals, Zverev will now meet Rafael Nadal. The Majorcan again showed problems and had to face Spanish compatriot Pablo Carreno Busta over the whole distance. But in the end the world number two got the better of 4: 6, 7: 5 and 6: 1.
In the second semifinal of Paris-Bercy the Russian Daniil Medvedev and the Canadian Milos Raonic face off.
