(MENAFN – Gulf Times) Seasonal flu vaccination is safe for pregnant women and may also help protect both mothers and their babies under the age of six months from the flu and as winter approaches more important than ever that they are vaccinated, said Dr. Huda Abdulla Alsaleh, senior consultant in obstetrics and gynecology and executive director of quality and safety at the Women’s Welfare and Research Center.
In a statement from Hamad Medical Corporation, Dr. Alsaleh said that although most people recover from the flu relatively quickly, pregnancy can change the way the human body handles a viral infection.
“The flu can be very serious during pregnancy for both mothers-to-be and their babies and leaves women at a higher risk for complications and, in some cases, can develop into pneumonia, said Dr. Al Saleh.” That is why we are encouraged that all pregnant women must get vaccinated as soon as possible, in order to be protected from the flu viruses that circulate this winter.
“The flu vaccine has been safely administered to millions of pregnant women around the world for many years. Flu vaccinations have not been proven to cause any harm to pregnant women or their children. The women they received. the flu vaccine during pregnancy also passes on some protection to their babies, which lasts for the first few months of their life.It is also safe for breastfeeding women to receive the vaccine.
The Ministry of Public Health (MoPH), Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC) and Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) have once again joined forces to offer free flu shots to everyone in Qatar. People can get the free flu shot at all primary health care centers, at more than 40 private clinics, and even when they attend outpatient appointments at the HMC.
Dr Al Saleh said that as we continue to fight Covid-19 it was more important than ever to get the flu shot this year.
“It’s even more critical this year because both the flu and Covid-19 can mean serious illness, said Dr. Al Saleh. ‘We still don’t know what this winter holds in regards to the two infections together, so we want to do everything possible to prevent both.
Although influenza and Covid-19 are two different viruses, it’s important this year to make sure you’re protected from seasonal flu. Getting a flu shot will not protect against Covid-19; however, influenza vaccination has many other important benefits including reducing the risk of influenza illness and hospitalizations.
