The new head-to-head between PlayStation 5 (Sony) and Xbox Series X (Microsoft) starts on November 10 with well-studied strategies in terms of prices, technical features and exclusive games catalog.

With its new console and associated range of services, Microsoft hopes to take revenge on Sony, which sold twice as many PlayStation 4 as Xbox One, since their respective releases in 2013.

Comparison between the two consoles “2020 version”:

– Data: Microsoft starts first

Microsoft, which was the first to unveil its console, will also be the first to put the Xbox Series X on sale on November 10. The commissions began on September 22nd.

The two versions of Sony’s PS5, announced ten days later, will go on sale November 12 in Australia, North America, New Zealand, South Korea, Japan and Mexico. In the rest of the world they will be available on November 19th.

Orders point to a record launch. Sony plans to sell 7.6 million game consoles by the end of March, improving the results of its PS4.

– Price: “premium” and “digital” version

Two versions to suit all budgets and new uses: Sony will offer a “premium” model that will cost 499 euros ($ 585), while a “digital” edition, intended for online games, will sell for 399 euros ($ 468).

Microsoft makes a similar bet with a “premium” version at the same price as its Japanese competitor, but being more aggressive in its “mini” version, priced at 299 euros ($ 350).

“Sony, with its most basic console, allows itself to be priced higher than Microsoft’s. It is the market leader, if it can afford it,” Laurent Michaud, analyst specializing in the video game sector, told AFP.

“It would have been interesting for Microsoft to push the pricing strategy to be slightly below the high end,” he added.

– Design, futuristic or sober?

When it comes to design, manufacturers have taken two different approaches.

Sony’s PS5 is tall and slim, with a V-shape and a white-on-black coating with a subtle blue flash that gives it a futuristic air that wouldn’t look out of place in a Star Wars setting.

The same happens with his command, which has also seen its historical aspect greatly changed.

The Xbox has remained more sober and classic with a black tower, with a very discreet logo and faithful control of the older generation.

– Features: Xbox more powerful

“The fastest and most powerful Xbox ever conceived”. On its website, the American brand does not fail to proclaim the technical characteristics of its future console in large letters and numbers. With a graphics processor rated at 12 teraflops, compared to 10.3 for the PS5, the X series offers more computing power than its competitor.

Although in other areas, especially in terms of memory and storage capacity, both consoles are similar.

“Is processor power at stake?” Asks Laurent Michaud. “The more the player base expands, the less power matters. Kids don’t take that into account when they play Fortnite, what they appreciate is the gaming experience.”

– Games: Sony promises an unreleased catalog

Sony has had great success by revealing a selection of titles that will accompany the PS5 launch, such as the action game “Spider Man: Miles Morales”.

Fans will have to wait a while for “Final Fantasy XVI”, the latest installment of this popular series, which will be available only for PS5.

Microsoft hoped that “Halo Infinite” would help catapult the launch of the Xbox Series X, but the coronavirus pandemic delayed its sale until 2021.

As for compatibility, only PS4 games will work on PS5, while all games released for Xbox from the brand’s first console will be compatible with the new console.
