Children living with HIV in developing countries will have access to a more suitable and strawberry-flavored treatment, but above all four times cheaper, Unitaid announced Tuesday, on the occasion of the international day of struggle. against this scourge.

The price of this new treatment, which includes a new component truly adapted to the specific needs of children, ranges from 480 to 120 dollars (434 to 109 francs) per year, after an agreement with the generic manufacturers Viatris and Mcleods, indicated Unitaid. , during a UN press conference in Geneva.

This long-awaited product has also benefited from swift approval from the US pharmaceutical agency, the FDA.

The new product will be available first in Benin, Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria, Uganda and Zimbabwe during the first half of 2021 “with the aim of rapidly expanding distribution (…) to a large extent. Number of countries”.

About 1.7 million children affected

About 1.7 million children worldwide are HIV positive, but only half of them receive treatment and 100,000 die each year, the organization says.

It is now available in a strawberry flavor and in soluble tablet form, which is more readily accepted by children than previous treatments which were available in large, insoluble tablets, Unitaid pointed out.

Many children living with HIV respond poorly to treatment because they are taking wrongly dosed or bitter-tasting antiretroviral drugs, Unitaid points out.
