In a few weeks, new Macs that include Apple’s ARM-based processor are likely to be introduced. But all Apple equipment shouldn’t be expected to have this new processor first. For example, the iMac could remain for the first half of 2021 as reported by the Chinese media The China Times.
2021, the year of the new ARM iMac
It was the same year, at WWDC, when Apple officially announced its new proprietary processor for its computers. This will have an ARM architecture and will come progressively as it obviously requires some adaptation time so that developers can make all applications compatible with this type of processor. That’s why in the eventual event on November 17th, only a new MacBook Air or MacBook with ARM processor will be seen without renewing the rest of the equipment. Specifically, this new Mac ARM would have an A14X processor that receives the codename “Tonga” which would already be in production to be released soon. As was the case with the iPhone 12’s A14 processor, this too would have TSMC’s 5nm architecture.
It will be next year when Apple launches a new iMac with its own development processor. Specifically, this CPU would be called A14T and has the code name ‘Mt. Jade‘even with a 5 nm structure. This processor will not come alone from Apple’s first proprietary GPU that has the extension codenamed “Lifuka”. This is something very positive because the confluence of GPU and CPU developed by Apple itself will give many possibilities. Obviously waiting for the performance tests to be carried out, this confluence will make the power much more optimal. This makes a lot of sense as iMacs are generally used by professionals to edit videos or photos. In these situations, good hardware is required to achieve the best performance, as can be clearly seen from the close link between hardware and software.
This information coincides with what Ming-Chi Kuo predicted. He said Apple would bet on the inclusion of these new chips in a 13.3-inch MacBook Pro and 24-inch iMac, it seems that everything supports this prediction.
Apple already prepares the new A15 processors
In another way, this report refers to the development of the A15 chip. These are the ones that will include the new iPhone 13 next year. At the moment it is only known that its architecture will be 5 nanometers and will be produced by TSMC. As for the A14 chip, as we commented earlier, the modified versions will be developed which predictably will be A15X and A15T for MacBook and also for the iMac range.
