We have two matches on Monday night, but we’ve already had our fair share of Premier League drama over the weekend.
There was still more controversy over VAR when Brighton hosted Liverpool and a last-minute comeback win for Manchester United in Southampton.
Elsewhere, Manchester City were at their best against struggling Burnley, while Mikel Arteta remained “very worried” after seeing his side suffer another home defeat, this time against Wolves.
Newcastle and Leeds returned to win at Crystal Palace and Everton respectively, and West Brom claimed their first win of the season against Sheffield United.
One game where there was little to notice was Chelsea’s draw with Tottenham, where Frank Lampard and Jose Moruinho may have both been happy with a point.
Here, Mirror Football gives you 10 talking points from the weekend’s Premier League action.
1. More troubles Emirates for Arsenal
Arsenal’s 2-1 defeat to Wolves leaves them in 14th place in the standings and condemns them to their third consecutive home defeat in the league.
The Gunners’ poor run at the Emirates – which also includes a 1-0 defeat to Leicester and a 3-0 defeat to Aston Villa – left Mikel Arteta “very concerned” after yet another lackluster performance.
The wolves were deserved winners thanks to their resolute defensive demonstration and free-flowing attack by Adama Traore and scorers Pedro Neto and Daniel Podence.
Arsenal, in contract, were toothless, equalized momentarily with Gabriel on a corner kick but struggled to create throughout the match. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was particularly silent.
2. Super-sub Cavani
While Manchester United were 2-0 behind Southampton at half-time, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer swapped the youths for experience by bringing Edinson Cavani in place of Mason Greenwood.
It proved to be a master stroke as Cavani continued to equalize and score a winner in the 92nd minute for the Red Devils, as well as picking up the assist for Bruno Fernandes’ goal in the 3-2 win.
The Uruguayan has yet to start a Premier League match, but his stunning second-half performance at St Mary’s gave Ole Gunnar Solskjaer a selection dilemma, even though the 33-year-old faces an FA probe.
The result brings United into the first half and Solskjaer will be delighted with Southampton’s fifth-place win. A special mention goes to James Ward-Prowse, who had the misfortune to be on the losing side after witnessing the Saints opening and scoring a sublime free kick in the first half.
3. Klopp amazed at the Amex
Jurgen Klopp felt ill after seeing Liverpool draw 1-1 in Brighton.
The Reds boss saw VAR cancel two of his team’s goals for offside infractions before he stepped in once again to award the Seagulls a penalty in injury time.
Pascal Gross turned the spot, as Neal Maupay had not been able to do in the first half, and Liverpool lost the chance to top the table.
To make matters worse, the champions suffered another injury while James Milner went away with a hamstring disorder.
All of which led to an intriguing post-match interview between Klopp and BT Sport’s Des Kelly as the debate over player welfare intensifies.
4. Five-star city
Manchester City dusted off the cobwebs to smash Burnley 5-0 at Etihad for a fourth straight season on Saturday afternoon.
At the start of the match, Pep Guardiola’s men had only scored 10 goals in eight league games and there were serious doubts about their credentials for the title.
But if City were short on confidence, they didn’t show it as they beat the Clarets thanks to a Riyad Mahrez hat-trick and goals from Benjamin Mendy and Ferran Torres.
Guardiola will be desperate to build on the emphatic victory after an inconsistent start to the season that left his team in 10th place in the league.
5. Loot shared at Bridge
As often seems to be the case, the game dubbed the ‘weekend match’ was slightly unchanged when Chelsea and Tottenham drew 0-0 in west London.
Many wondered how Harry Kane and Son Heung-min would fare against a blues team with their own crop of fit forwards, namely Timo Werner, Tammy Abraham and Hakim Ziyech.
But defenses reigned supreme at Stamford Bridge as Spurs kept their third straight clean sheet and Chelsea their fourth in five games.
Only the Spurs (9) have conceded fewer league goals than Chelsea’s 10 and the cautious deal has reaffirmed the status of the two sides as legitimate title candidates.
6. Leeds beat Everton
After a resounding start to the season, Everton fell to their fourth defeat in five games when Leeds came out 1-0 victors at Goodison Park.
Raphinha’s late bullet in the bottom corner was the difference in Saturday night’s game, while Kalvin Phillips was particularly impressive; Leeds have kept a clean clean sheet consecutively since the defensive midfielder returned from injury.
Meanwhile, Everton struggled creatively in the absence of first-choice full-backs Seamus Coleman and Lucas Digne, who are often the Toffees’ main source of threat from the sidelines.
Carlo Ancelotti will meditate on how to bring his team back to victory in the absence of captain Coleman and co-assist Digne.
7. Eagles shot down by late Newcastle volley
It’s fair to say that the Friday night Premier League offering wasn’t the most compelling, until the 88th minute, that is.
The Selhurst Park match looked set to end in a goalless draw and Crystal Palace probably had the lion’s share of chances.
But Callum Wilson hit Joelinton’s pass before the two combined again just two minutes later when Wilson became the Brazilian’s supplier to score.
Wilson has shone since his £ 20 million transfer from Bournemouth last summer and, encouraging for the Magpies, he appears to be helping to get the best out of Joelinton, which many have canceled after a disastrous 2019/20 campaign.
8. Baggies takes six-pointer
Sheffield United form makes reading bleak.
The Blades have only one point in 10 games, losing their last five, and a 1-0 defeat to West Brom puts even more pressure on manager Chris Wilder.
Conor Gallagher’s goal in the first half was enough to get the Baggies across the finish line for their first win of the season and knocked them out of the relegation zone.
The last four teams – West Brom, Burnley, Fulham and Sheffield United – are four points behind the rest of the division.
It looks like only one of those teams will remain in the top flight next season.
9. An update on Jimenez
The last match of the weekend was marked by a serious injury suffered by Raul Jimenez at the start of the Wolves away match at Arsenal.
The Mexican striker was involved in a severe head-on with David Luiz and received medical treatment for several minutes before being pulled off the pitch and taken to hospital.
To the relief of Nuno Espirito Santo and football fans up and down the country, the Wolves have confirmed that Jimenez is “at ease” and “resting” after undergoing surgery on a fractured skull.
10. A look to the future
What are your predictions for Monday night matches? Have your say here.
As mentioned, the tenth day is not yet over and two races are scheduled for Monday evening.
First, Leicester can close the gap over Tottenham as they welcome Fulham to King Power.
The Foxes win will see them override Chelsea and Liverpool to join league leaders Spurs with 21 points, while Fulham could pull themselves out of the drop zone if they can cause a capsize in the East Midlands.
The other game of the evening sees West Ham in form against Aston Villa, who had four wins at the start of the season but lost their last four.
