The prevalence of type 2 diabetes continues to rise in France. Réunion is the French region most affected by this diabetes with double the number of people affected. Reunion diabetics are younger, more often women and have more frequent complications.
Prediabrun, has the ambition to curb the increase in the number of diabetics in Réunion, focusing its action on the phase preceding diabetes.
A study focusing on prediabetes in Réunion
Prediabrun is interested in individuals with prediabetes (or prediabetes) in Reunion. Prediabetes is the stage that precedes diabetes. Pre-diabetic individuals are most at risk of progressing to diabetes, but this transition is not automatic. This project aims to improve knowledge of prediabetes in order to slow or even halt the transition to diabetes in these at-risk individuals.
Therefore, this collaborative study aims to describe the characteristics of the Reunionese and Reunionese prediabetics included in the study and then to follow the evolution of their glycemia over time to identify all socio-demographic, biological, medical and lifestyle factors. that play a role in the evolution towards diabetes or towards a return to normal, in order to offer the most appropriate treatments to reduce the transition from prediabetes to diabetes.
A study with regular medical follow-up by the attending physician
Prediabrun provides for the active participation of the treating doctors because it is they who refer patients to the study and continue to follow them, annually, as recommended by the official recommendations.
The population-based study began in July 2019 and plans to recruit 200 volunteer GPs to recruit prediabetics into their patients, with the aim of including 2,000 prediabetics and evaluating their outcome over the next 5 years.
The study involves patients aged 25 to 70 with prediabetes without a history of diabetes, with the exception of gestational diabetes.
Major spinoffs expected
The anonymous collection of health and lifestyle data on prediabetics will firstly improve scientific knowledge on prediabetes and, secondly, shed light on the risk factors for diabetes in these individuals.
The identification of these risk factors will help to improve the management of prediabetic patients and the optimization of prevention campaigns at local level.
