After five positive crown tests with the Ukrainian national football team, the Nations League duel against Germany in Leipzig is at risk.
On Friday evening (13 November 2020) the Ukrainian Association announced that four players and a team manager had to be isolated due to the results of the morning tests. It was initially unclear whether the game could still take place.
“We arrived for training today. These four players remained in the hotel, they are isolated. Tomorrow we have another test. So far we have been waiting for information on the match, especially from UEFA,” said Andrei Shevchenko, Ukraine coach , quoted on the association’s website. The players are therefore Andrej Jarmolenko, Viktor Tsigankow, Viktor Kovalenko and Sergej Sidorschuk.
The Leipzig health department decides
UEFA regulations stipulate that the match will take place on condition that Ukraine has 12 players and a goalkeeper at its disposal. However, the decision on a possible quarantine for the entire team rests with the Leipzig Department of Health.
The Ukrainian team will be tested again on Saturday around 14:00. If they can’t compete, the German selection would likely be rewarded with a win at the green table. Only if the question of guilt for a refusal cannot be clarified, the lottery will decide on the winner. So far, all the tests at the DFB-Elf have been negative.
“Wear masks and keep taking tests”
It is not the first time that the virus has hit the Ukrainian national team particularly hard. Shevchenko even had to bench his 45-year-old goalkeeper coach Alexander Schowkowski against France in October. In the Nations League first leg against the DFB team, Ukraine was severely weakened by the crown. “There were guys who recovered faster and who are feeling better. With some we can see that it is still a bit difficult for them,” Shevchenko said.
However, the coronavirus isn’t just causing unrest between blue and yellow personnel. Ukrainian journalists spoke to the coach about the alleged lack of discipline regarding quarantine measures. According to Shevchenko, however, the players obey all the regulations: “We wear masks and constantly test”.
