Hamilton had tested negative for the virus three times in the past week, the last time being Sunday afternoon as part of his usual series of tests. On Monday morning, however, the Brit woke up with mild symptoms and was informed that a contact was positive.
Then another test was estimated at Hamilton, which was positive. This result was confirmed in a subsequent further test.
In compliance with COVID-19 regulations and Bahrain’s public health authorities, Hamilton is now in solitary confinement. Aside from mild symptoms, he is fine and feeling fit, Mercedes announced.
Who will be authorized to speak for the team over the weekend, you want to announce in due course. Stoffel Vandoorne and Esteban Gutierrez are under contract as substitutes. Vandoorne is currently in road testing with Formula E in Spain, but will make the regular trip to Bahrain after testing ends and would therefore be available.
Vandoorne has a small advantage in terms of experience: the Belgian is said to have only been in Bahrain in November with the 2018 Mercedes – as part of a test by Formula 2 driver Nikita Masepin, who he trained.
For Lewis Hamilton, the season may even be over completely, because the season finale in Abu Dhabi will only take place a week later, and depending on the Bahrain exit rules, it could be a problem. That would leave the Brit with eleven wins this season and he would no longer be able to attack Sebastian Vettel and Michael Schumacher’s record of 13.
Since the Turkish Grand Prix, Hamilton has already become world champion.
