A new star in the sky of the console? We tested the Playstation 5.
It’s always a great time for any gamer to get their hands on new hardware, touch it for the first time and, of course, try it out. It is no different for us, and in our work we are also fortunate to be able to lend a hand a little earlier than most others. Since we’ve already been able to try Sony’s PlayStation 5, we don’t want to hide our impressions of the console and hardware features, the new DualSense controller and more. Below, we will also cover topics such as backwards compatibility, PSVR and of course the software offering in the beginning in detail.
Lightning-fast installation with style
When Sony unveiled the design of the PS5, one could certainly argue about “good” or “not so good”. The wave-shaped plastic covers on the top and bottom sides (left and right in horizontal position respectively), between which the large black plastic front looks slightly inward, is undoubtedly not for everyone. We really like the streamlined design, but we admit we’d like the console even if it looked like an 80’s VHS VCR. When you first encounter the PS5, you might be surprised by the weight, because despite 4.5kg, around 1100g more than the PS4 Pro, the console feels lighter. This should mainly have to do with the dimensions (approx. 26.5 x 38.5 x 10.0 cm), with which the PS5 has about twice the volume of the PS4 Pro. However, the 4.5 kg applies only to the model that we have before us, including the permanently installed UHD Blu-ray drive, which, in our opinion, is a bit slower in the installation process than the predecessor. The so-called Digital Edition, which costs a fifth less, weighs only about 4 kg.
Even after the first start, everything goes smoothly. Step by step, similar to the PS4, you will be guided through the most important processes, set up a WLAN connection (Wi-Fi 6 of course) or, alternatively, simply connect the network cable on the back, download the new firmware and connect the your PSN Account or create a new one. At the same time, the software allows you to download the most popular entertainment apps (without Netflix or Amazon Prime Video, life would only be half as good) and connect your account to social networks. If you wish, you can of course move all of that and fully manually adjust it later, or you can easily adjust the privacy settings, which can be adjusted separately in stages or at each point.
What is immediately noticeable, however, even after longer gaming sessions: the PS5 is noticeably quieter than some PS4 models. The only thing that gets a little louder despite the insulation plugs is the drive while installing the game. While playing a Blu-ray, however, it’s pleasantly quiet, so you’d rather hear your own breathing noises. Speaking of Blu-ray or UHD-BD: annoyingly, it is not yet possible to specify in the options that HDCP is automatically used for BD playback, but it is disabled in games. As before, you can only enable or disable HDCP globally. So if you want to grab externally and then insert a movie, you always have to go back to the setting.
