Playstation 5: PS4 games reportedly work great

The Eurogamer website has tested games for the Playstation 4 and the later PS5 console. The downward compatibility of the upcoming Sony hardware already works great.

On the upcoming PS5 console, selected Playstation 4 games can be played using backward compatibility, as the Japanese manufacturer has already made public. Now the Eurogamer site has tested this compatibility. With the exception of 10 PS4 titles, all Playstation 4 games can also be played on PS5. If a PS4 game ships without an Fps lock or a “high performance mode” exists as an optimization for the PS4 Pro version, the Playstation 5 can display the game at 60 fps without the need for a Requirements patch.

No automatic HDR when playing PS4 games on Playstation 5

The improvements in playing PS4 titles without a patch on PS5 are comparable to jumping between games on Xbox One and Xbox Series X. Crysis Remastered now runs in Full HD on Playstation 5 at a constant 60fps instead of 30fps like on PS4 Pro. But there are no ray tracing effects yet.

Unlike the Xbox Series X and Series S, there is no automatic HDR on the Playstation 5. The Microsoft console automatically turns on automatic HDR as soon as you start a backward compatible game. In this case, a Microsoft algorithm recognizes areas of the image that are being provided with additional image information. For example, light sources displayed such as street lamps, car headlights and the like are identified using pattern recognition and automatically assigned an extended color space, so that the illuminated areas of the respective game scene now appear brighter and more realistic than in Xbox One thanks to Auto HDR. The Xbox Series X and smaller S Series will go on sale November 10, the Playstation 5 will follow on November 17.

Playstation 5 Backward Compatibility Collection:

  • With the exception of 10 PS4 titles, all Playstation 4 games can also be played on PS5. Many PS4 games run at a constant 60 fps on the Playstation 5, as long as the title of the game in question does not have an Fps lock.
  • Crysis Remastered, for example, now runs in Full HD on Playstation 5 at a constant 60 fps instead of 30 fps on PS4 Pro. However, there are currently no ray tracing effects as they need a patch.
  • Unlike the Xbox Series X and Series S, the Playstation 5 does not have an automatic HDR that is automatically activated on both Microsoft consoles when you start an Xbox One game on the Xbox Series consoles, for example.
