PlayStation 5: eBay warns fraudulent sellers

The chaotic start to PlayStation 5 sales is no longer just asking scalpers to buy consoles in large quantities to resell to desperate fans at inflated prices, but also to scammers offering console photos on eBay. The online platform has announced to Eurogamer that it intends to take action against the sellers of these photo auctions.

EBay Germany is also affected: a quick search for the term “PlayStation 5 Photo” returned 18 results at the time of this article (November 29, 2020, 10:15 am). The auctions included bids with titles such as “PS5 Sony PlayStation 5 Disc Edition with controller PHOTO – immediate shipping!“or”!!New!! Playstation 5 / new PS5 with drive (photo)This last auction even had a bidder for a sum of 300.00 euros.

While all sellers point out that bidders are bidding on a console photo and not actual hardware, the auctions are clearly designed to mislead customers. When asked, eBay employees told Eurogamer:
“We condemn these opportunistic sellers who try to deceive other users. We are currently removing all PS5 photo listings on our marketplace and will take reasonable action towards sellers. Buyers should pay close attention to all acquisitions, especially high-priced items or highly sought-after items, and read the offer description carefully. Buyers who receive an item that is not as described are entitled to a refund through our eBay Money Back Guarantee, provided they have completed the transaction on the eBay platform.“

At this point we can only warn against questionable offers and the purchase of overpriced PS5 consoles. We will also notify you as soon as we have new information on deliveries and subsequent sales of the next generation hardware.
