WARNING: this post contains spoilers for the current season of Grey’s Anatomy.

Anyone who saw the one from last week Grey’s Anatomy The season 17 premiere was hit with a twist: the return of Derek (Patrick Dempsey), who died in season 11.

Derek only showed up after Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) passed out in the hospital parking lot and during an appearance in Ellen DeGeneres’ show (via Us Weekly) Dempsey confirmed that the dream sequence was the result of Meredith contracting COVID-19.

“I was like, what a great opportunity for the people and how great it would be for the fans, really, to see everyone come together in this weird way,” he said.

Wait what? That’s right: Dempsey just confirmed what you might suspect. Meredith Gray has COVID-19.

Even though Dempsey has already explained what’s really going on with his return, he’s not quite as blown away as to how many more episodes he will appear: “That’s a good question. Not sure how many [episodes]. I know I’m all season. Come back to visit. “

We can only imagine what will happen next, but if you are a Grey’s Stan, you’re used to it.
