A new study has said that asthma patients are less likely to be infected with the coronavirus.

The study, published in The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, aimed to observe susceptibility to Covid-19 in patients with bronchial asthma.

For the study, the scientists analyzed data from Covid-19 positive patients between February and June 2020 from a large national health maintenance organization in Israel.

The researchers said 37,469 subjects were tested for the Covid-19 RT-PC test and that the results for 2,266 of them were positive. This constituted just over 6% of the 6.05% of patients who tested positive.

Asthma was found in 153 (or 6.75%) subjects in the Covid-19-positive group, the study says.

“We observed a lower susceptibility to Covid-19 in patients with pre-existing asthma,” the study authors said.

They also added that more research is needed to come to a strong conclusion.

Another study published in October and conducted by researchers in the United States stated that asthma patients do not have a higher risk of hospitalization than non-asthmatic patients who tested positive for coronavirus.

Researchers reported that asthma patients were 70 percent less likely to die from the virus, Hindustan Times reported.
