Patients are more likely to transmit the coronavirus within the first five days of symptom onset

We need to ensure that people isolate themselves as soon as they show symptoms, however mild they are, say the authors of a British study published in Lancet Microbe.

By the time some people get sample results, they may be past their most contagious stage on Facebook. This is when people are most contagious just before they experience symptoms and during the first week after contracting the virus.

Patients are more likely to transmit the coronavirus within the first five days of symptom onset, the British team believes after reviewing 79 global studies on Covid-19.

The researchers conclude that despite the persistence of fragments of the virus’s genetic material, no viable virus was found beyond nine days of symptom onset.
