Pakistani cricketers on “final warning” after six players broke New Zealand isolation rules

New Zealand Cricket (NZC) said it “was informed today that six members of the team touring Pakistan, currently in managed solitary confinement in Christchurch, have tested positive for COVID-19.”

Four of the cases were new and two were “historic,” the press release added. NZC said all players had tested negative for the virus before leaving Lahore on four separate occasions.

“As a result, the Pakistani team’s exemption from training while in managed isolation was suspended until the investigation was completed,” NZC said.

New Zealand has been widely praised for its approach to managing the coronavirus and has reported just over 2,000 total cases and 25 deaths since the start of the pandemic, according to the John Hopkins University of Medicine.

“Expected Behaviors”

Pakistan’s official cricket website said the team left for New Zealand on Monday.

After landing, many of the Pakistani cricketers were caught on camera breaking the isolation rules, the New Zealand Ministry of Health said.

“Since their arrival, several team members have been seen on CCTV at the facility violating managed isolation rules, despite clear, consistent and detailed communication of expected behaviors while in the facility,” a press release read. “The team as a whole was issued with one final warning.”

According to health officials, 53 team members arrived in Christchurch on November 24 and were tested on the first day.

“These cases are the results of those tests,” the health ministry said. He added that these new cases would be counted outside his usual daily tally due to “the high public interest in visiting sports teams.”

Those with positive tests are required to remain in quarantine rooms within the facility, and no team member is allowed to leave the facility to train. There is no risk to the public as the insulation violations occurred within the facility, the health department said.

In a statement on Sunday, the Pakistani cricket team said a player had been left behind from the trip after reporting a fever, but had previously tested negative for Covid-19.

The Pakistani team is expected to play three T20 games and two test games while in New Zealand, with the first game scheduled at Auckland’s Eden Park on 18 December.
