Manchester City defender Oleksandr Zinchenko revealed that he and his family were threatened with death after his mistake in Sunday’s Nations League game gave Germany a goal.

Zinchenko – who played in midfield instead of his usual left-back position – was stripped of Leon Goretzka’s possession before his former teammate Leroy Sane scored Germany’s first goal in Ukraine’s 3-1 defeat.

Fans were furious at Zinchenko’s mistake as Andriy Shevchenko’s side struggled to avoid relegation from the UEFA Nations League top flight.

Despite Ukraine taking a surprise lead in the 12th minute with a Roman Yaremchuk goal, Germany were quick to respond.

Zinchenko’s mistake gave Germany a chance to return to the game, just 11 minutes from the first goal.

Timo Werner went on to score each side of the interval to see Germany go apart from the pack with a game to play.

The end result will require Shevchenko’s men to beat Switzerland in Tuesday’s final group game to avoid relegation.

Zinchenko wrote on Instagram to share the dismay at the vile abuse he and his family received from fans after pinpointing his loss of possession as the sole cause of Ukraine’s defeat.

He said: ‘Reading all the dirt that has poured into me and my family after yesterday’s game, I’m convinced once again what kind of people we have and how they know how to support.

“Fortunately or unfortunately, the demand is already such that it is no longer legitimate to make mistakes in another half.

‘For losing the ball in ANOTHER half of the court, I repeat, people wish death to you and your family.

“Feeling responsible for the defeat, I turn to adequate fans, of whom unfortunately we have little left.

“The final awaits all of us with you, stay with the team.”

It is not the first time that Zinchenko has reached out to his fans through the use of social media.

Zinchenko was forced to make a statement on Instagram addressing his wife’s comments after he blamed Pep Guardiola for Manchester City’s failure to win the Champions League.

Zinchenko’s wife, Vlada Sedan – who works as a sports journalist in Ukraine – took a shot at Guardiola after City’s 3-1 defeat to Lyon.

Sedan not only hit Guardiola for leaving her husband on the bench, but he also planned his decision to play a third defender rather than his traditional four defender.

His wife Vlada Sedan said City’s exit from the Champions League was “ completely Guardiola’s fault ”

Speaking on his YouTube channel, he said: Maybe I don’t have the right to say it, maybe Zinchenko will forbid me. But to put it mildly, and not to swear, it’s all Guardiola’s fault.

‘At such a crucial time, making such an experimental tactic for Man City is a disappointment.

‘I have no right to criticize, but why play three center backs when the players themselves take the lead?

‘I simply have no words, because to have such a formation … look at what the players play at Man City, what a bench. Literally few clubs in the world can boast such reserves. ‘

Zinchenko was forced to distance himself from his wife’s opinion and issued a statement declaring it on his wedding day.

In a statement shared on Instagram, he said: “ Guys, I need to say a few things about this interview. First of all, I didn’t say anything bad or judgmental about our tactics, so don’t confuse my words please.

‘I was explaining that we players understand the effect that tactics have and how, given that we have such great experiences, we can adapt to the tactics that are given to us.

‘We lost to Lyon in the evening, but that doesn’t mean the manager made a mistake in trying.

‘If you’ve seen my interviews in the past and the way I talk about our manager, you can believe me. He is number one.

He went on to justify the passionate opinion expressed by his wife – to whom he proposed to enter the field after Ukraine qualified for Euro 2020 – during his video.

He said: ‘The second about my wife. Even though my wife is a journalist, she is also a fan.

‘During the season she has traveled with us to all away and home games because she is a huge fan of City.

In the video you can see his emotions right after the game and he gave an opinion like all fans do because he wanted us to do better.

‘We fully understand now that she shouldn’t post it on social media because she is my wife.

‘But he wasn’t trying to express a reporter’s opinion about the manager … he was simply reacting to disappointment as a fan.

‘I’ve been writing right now from my wedding and instead of enjoying that incredible moment I have to do it because I can’t skip it and leave it like this.

‘I hope that you understand.’
