People with signs of early Alzheimer’s disease can benefit from a special medicinal drink. It contains several nutrients that have previously been shown in studies to slow the progression of Alzheimer’s disease. After three years of treatment, brain loss and intellectual performance were significantly better in study participants than in people who only received a placebo.
Patients who received the multi-nutrient drink lost 20% less brain volume over three years than those in the comparison group. Their mental performance also decreased by 40-70% less. This made it easier for study participants who had received the nutrient cocktail to orient themselves, better cope with daily activities such as paying bills, and more appropriately respond to emergencies than people in the control group.
It is important to start treatment early
“The positive effects of the treatment were particularly evident in the participants who were able to start at a very early stage of Alzheimer’s. We were surprised that the effect of the nutrient mix even increased over the course of the treatment.” explained Tobias Hartmann, Professor of Dementia Prevention at Saarland University and head of the European study LipiDiDiet. He and his team published the results of the study in the trade journal “Alzheimer’s & Dementia”.
The nutrient mix mainly contained docosahexaenoic acid, eicosapentaenoic acid, phospholipids and choline, as well as uridine monophosphate, vitamins B12, B6, C, E, folic acid and selenium. This special combination had already reduced a number of brain changes typical of Alzheimer’s disease in preliminary tests and had positive effects on brain activity. So far there are no drugs to treat Alzheimer’s dementia; symptoms can only be relieved temporarily. Delaying the disease through a special diet would therefore be of great importance to those affected and could allow them to live independent and self-determined lives longer.
