Over the weekend Andrea Dovizioso refused Yamaha’s offer to test the riders. The Japanese have now reached an agreement with Cal Crutchlow.
35-year-old Cal Crutchlow received an offer from Honda for the 2021 season, but the Brit has since turned down HRC’s offer. He should have done without his lucrative Monster Energy contract there. It has been promoting the American beverage manufacturer for twelve years. His area of responsibility could have included the Superbike World Championship, the Suzuka eight-hour race and individual MotoGP testing.
But the three-time MotoGP winner, who has been with LCR-Honda since 2015, is now joining forces with the Japanese factory after the cancellation of “Dovi” at Yamaha. In 2011 and 2012 he rode a Yamaha M1 in the premier class at Tech3.
Crutchlow has also recently been in conversation with Aprilia Racing and could have become Aleix Espargaró’s teammate after Andrea Iannone’s extended suspension in 2021.
But in Yamaha, Cal Crutchlow finds a competitive package. In 2021 he will be able to ride three Grand Prix races with a wildcard and act as a substitute rider for Monster Yamaha and Petronas-Yamaha.
In the Valencia paddock today we heard: Crutchlow and Yamaha Motor Racing have agreed, the contract is ready to be signed.
“Cal still belongs to the MotoGP World Championship,” LCR team principal Lucio Cecchinello said after Cal’s third place on the Le Mans grid in an interview with SPEEDWEEK.com.
Crutchlow takes the place of Jorge Lorenzo at Yamaha, who fell out of favor with the Japanese.
SPEEDWEEK.com announced two weeks ago that Aprilia is talking to Lorenzo. At that time it was the role of the test driver. “Aprilia is my plan B, Yamaha my plan A”, confirmed Jorge Lorenzo two days later.
