Now the president of the United States is not only drawing the anger of Neil Young, but also of Phil Collins: the British music legend is opposed to using his hit song “In The Air Tonight” at Trump demonstrations.
British music legend Phil Collins, 69, wants to ban US President Donald Trump from using his hit song “In The Air Tonight” in the election campaign. The management of the former Genesis frontman announced Monday (local time) to the German news agency that Collins’ lawyers had sent Trump’s election campaign team a cease and desist statement in June and again last Friday (23 October). They have not yet received a response from Trump representatives.
Phil Collins considers the use of the song “highly insensitive”
According to a statement from Collins spokespersons, Trump was not allowed to use the song “In The Air Tonight” in a recent campaign appearance in the US state of Iowa. Phil Collins was one of many artists who opposed Trump using their music for his political advantage, the message said.
Against the backdrop of coronavirus transmission, it is also “extremely insensitive” to use this song. Trump often holds his rallies before rallies where most people don’t wear masks to protect themselves from virus contamination.
Musicians repeatedly complain that Trump uses their songs for campaign appearances. For example, the Rolling Stones, Elton John, Ozzy Osbourne, Adele and the family of singer Tom Petty, who died in 2017, have criticized the President of the United States for doing so. Canadian rock star Neil Young filed a copyright infringement lawsuit in August.
