The COVID-19 pandemic is raging around the world, and a new study sheds light on why someone has “long-term COVID,” where people continue to have symptoms for long periods of time, more than the average of 14 -15 days.

After looking at the lungs of people who had succumbed to COVID-19, doctors found persistent and long-lasting damage to the lungs, which could explain “long-term COVID.”

Coronavirus: unique properties
Doctors have found that COVID-19 has unique properties that could explain why it does so much damage in extreme cases.
“The results show that COVID-19 is not simply a disease caused by the death of virus-infected cells, but is likely the result of these abnormal cells persisting in the lungs for long periods of time,” said Mauro Jacket, professor at Kings. College London, said one of the scientists who conducted the study, as quoted by The Hindu.

To determine the intensity of damage caused by COVID-19, doctors took tissue samples from the heart, lungs, liver, and kidneys from 41 patients who died between February and April 2020 at the University of Trieste, Italy.
“It is very easy to imagine that one of the reasons for long COVID cases is that the lungs (tissues) are badly destroyed,” Jacket told Reuters.
“Even if someone does recover from COVID, the damage caused could be enormous,” the scientist added.
Persistent symptoms of COVID-19
According to many studies from different parts of the world, the coronavirus can continue to cause symptoms in patients even after they have recovered. These include shortness of breath, fatigue and running away or, in simpler words, “long COVID”.

Additionally, among the 41 deceased patients, doctors found unique features of COVID-19, in contrast to the normal symptoms exhibited by pneumonia.
