Blockchain technology is the backbone of the burgeoning bitcoin industry (BTC) and cryptocurrency. NASA engineer Ronald Reisman believes that blockchain-based communication systems could be the key to stopping spoofing and denial of service attacks on the US air traffic control system.
The long-awaited Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) system is expected to come into operation in 2020, but Reisman believes the system is already at risk of cyberattacks.
ADS-B is a surveillance technology in which an aircraft determines its position via satellite navigation and allows it to be monitored.

However, ADS-B does not protect flight plans and aircraft positions, which presents a number of problems.
And Blockchain could be the solution, believes the NASA Reisman engineer.
It is said that NASA is preparing the use of an open source authorized blockchain framework for ADS-B vulnerabilities.
A blockchain architecture could protect and improve communication between authorized agents and minimize the risk that cybercriminals can access easily.

Reisman's proposal uses "certification authorities, support for smart contracts and higher bandwidth communication channels" to ensure that communications between aircraft and agents, such as air traffic control, remain secure.
The NASA engineer, Ronald Reisman, said: "The system proposes to exploit an industrial-level open source blockchain framework called Hyperledger Fabric to demonstrate potential solutions to vicious technical problems that threaten the adoption of ADS-B by military, corporate and other aircraft operators who do not want their operations and movements to be identifiable by the general public ".
Hyperledger Fabric is a blockchain developed far from the fintech sector and designed for business use.
And even if his "is not perfect" approach is "based on available technology," the paper says.

This was interpreted as a sign of approval of readiness for a wider use of blockchain globally.
Furthermore, Reisman believes that the proposed blockchain prototype can be "economically and rapidly distributed" on a large scale.
He cites the use of Hyperledger Fabric in areas outside of finance and believes that something similar could be used in the aviation sector.
Honeywell, one of the leading manufacturers of aircraft components, is another giant in the industry, a secure blockchain that has a role in the aerospace industry.
