Blockchain is becoming a hot item in the aerospace industry. NASA also seems to heat blockchain technology and work on ways (PDF) to implement it in next-generation systems. An aeronautical engineer at NASA Ames Research Center named Ronald J. Reisman believes that blockchain-based communication systems can help prevent spoofing and denial of service attacks on the US air traffic control system.
The automatic transmission detection system (ADS-B) should start operating in 2020, but Reisman says the system is at risk of attack. ADS-B does not protect flight plans and aircraft positions, which opens up a number of potential problems. Blockchain could be the solution, and NASA is not the only organization trying to block the network to solve problems in the aerospace sector.
The NASA engineer sees Blockchain as a solution
NASA's reisman proposes the use of an authorized open source blockchain framework as a solution to ADS-B vulnerabilities. A blockchain platform would allow secure and efficient communication between air traffic services, operational support or other authorized entities, without the risk that bad actors get access with the same ease.
Reisman's platform uses "certification authority, intelligent contract support and higher bandwidth communication channels" to ensure that communication between aircraft and authorized participants remains secure, or at least much safer than the current system.

"(The system) Proposes to exploit an open-source open-source enterprise blockchain framework called Hyperledger Fabric to demonstrate potential solutions to vicious technical problems that threaten the adoption of ADS-B by military, corporate and of a different kind who do not want their operations and movements to be perceptible to the general public ".
Furthermore, Reisman believes that the blockchain prototype can be "economically and rapidly distributed" on a large scale. He cites the use of Hyperledger Fabric in many industries outside of finance and thinks that something similar could be used in air communications systems.
Honeywell is already on The Blockchain
Honeywell is a major manufacturer of aircraft components and has recently started selling its aerospace parts via a company-owned web portal. Their new online sales platform is based on blockchain and the company believes that blockchain has a much larger role in the aerospace industry.
According to Lisa Butters, who works for Honeywell Aerospace, less than 2.5% of transactions for aerospace components are made online. Not only is online space a big market for parties, Honeywell could set the standard for the way they are distributed with their blockchain platform.
Aeron's CEO, Artem Orange, said this about how the blockchain can adapt to the aerospace parts market,
"The airspace is complex, so there is little room for violations Without the implementation of blockchain technology, the industry is already safe and effective, which means that it would be difficult to find 39. use for blockchain technology in an already functioning industry, although the application of Honeywell and Aeron blockchain technology is a good example of how it can be applied efficiently. What encryption will benefit from the acceptance of the blockchain is unknowable, but some of them will likely become global reserve resources in the next decade. If there are big problems in the global banking system, these changes could come much sooner.
