Mozilla has released the Firefox 83 browser and has equipped it with a new faster JavaScript engine and a revised mode for HTTPS-Only, which now enforces secure connections via HTTPS to build websites. Additionally, Firefox version 83.0 has extended gesture control for touchpads.

HTTPS only with HTTPS everywhere

The new HTTPS-only mode is based on the hugely popular HTTPS-Everywhere Firefox extension from the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), which Firefox developers want from the start Mozilla Blog thanks.

We also want to thank the work of our friends at EFF, who have pioneered a similar approach in HTTPS Everywhere’s EASE mode.

It is a privilege to work with people who are passionate about building the web we want: free, independent and secure. We are grateful to many Mozillians for making HTTPS-only mode possible.

With HTTPS mode, the browser now offers the ability to force the use of encrypted HTTPS to create websites quickly and easily via the user interface. It looks like this in the browser’s address bar.

The way to force secure connections via the HTTPS protocol can be activated quickly and easily after installing Mozilla 83.0. HTTPS-Only can be enabled for all windows and only for private mode.

  • Menu> Settings
  • Data protection and security
  • Enable HTTPS only mode

If websites cannot be accessed in HTTPS-only mode, the mode can be disabled specifically for individual websites by clicking on the lock symbol and deactivating the mode for the corresponding website.

In the future, Mozilla users should establish secure connections only via HTTPS, which is why developers are increasingly focusing on HTTPS-only mode. It can be assumed that the mode will be activated by default in future versions.

In light of the very high availability of HTTPS, we believe that the time has come to allow our users to choose to always use HTTPS. That’s why we’ve created HTTPS-only mode, which ensures Firefox doesn’t make insecure connections without your permission.

The new JavaScript engine is faster

In addition to the HTTPS-only mode, the developers have also equipped Firefox 83.0 with a new and powerful JavaScript engine that should load websites with large numbers of scripts up to 20% faster and allow for smoother operation. The new “warp compiler” is also expected to reduce memory usage by up to 8%.

As usual, Firefox 83.0 can be downloaded from the ComputerBase download repository directly under this message.
