Moving away from the manufacturer Intel: Apple installs its own chips

[ad_1]

In the future, Apple will rely even more on its own chips than before. The vendor and now its competitor Intel will not like it at all.

The iPhone group presented the first three models with their own development chips instead of Intel processors. The new semiconductor called M1, which is expected to guarantee up to two times longer battery life, marks the exit from the partner chip Intel, which has equipped Macs for nearly 15 years. Apple announced the move in June. For Macs, this is the third change in the chip platform since the move from Motorola to IBM’s PowerPC in the early 1990s and to Intel in 2005.

With the switch, the group can also use its Macs on the same software platform as its iPhones and iPads for the first time. The internal chip with the designation M1 combines a main processor with eight cores and the graphics chip in one system.

The M1 chips are based on the architecture of the chip designer ARM, which belongs to the Japanese group Softbank, and who also manages iPhones and iPads. With this, developers can also bring iPhone apps to Macs. According to Craig Federighi, Apple’s chief of software, apps should launch much faster than before and even the most demanding programs should run smoother. As with the iPhone, a special area is supposed to improve image processing with machine learning, for example.

Mac programs that were originally adapted to Intel processors and have not yet been adapted to Apple chips must now be “translated” in real time.

More runtime

With M1, Apple equips the Macbook Air, the most popular Mac model, among others. Now it works without a fan. Thanks to the cheaper chip, the battery should allow 15 hours of web browsing and 18 hours of video playback.

In addition, the more powerful Macbook Pro with 13-inch display and the Mac Mini desktop calculator also have the new Apple processor.

Apple is betting that the stronger tech connection between iPhone and Mac will encourage app developers to work on applications that run on computers and smartphones. According to Federighi, Adobe has already announced that early next year it will release the most popular Photoshop image editing program for M1 devices.

Apple is best known for its iPhones and iPads, but Mac computers also bring tens of billions of dollars in annual sales for the company. In the Corona crisis, which triggered a trend towards home offices, Mac revenues increased in the last quarter to $ 9 billion, a value never before achieved. Macs had a 14% share in the group’s total sales from Cupertino, California.

All new models with the M1 chip remain externally unchanged. Apple apparently wants to convey continuity over the course of the huge technological change. Because one thing will certainly no longer be possible in the future. Parallel installation of Apple Mac OS X and Microsoft Windows operating system.

With the new generation of chips, Apple is expected to become much more vendor-independent from Intel and likely also be able to increase its already substantial profit margins.
