Comedian and actor Karl Dall has died at the age of 79. He had previously suffered a stroke.

Karl Dall only took on a new role in early November: he played old rock star Richie Sky in the ARD series “Rote Rosen”. In Lüneburg, where the soap opera is filmed, on 11 November he suffered a stroke with a cerebral hemorrhage. According to his family, he has not recovered from this. “Despite the use of all technological measures and intensive care, today he fell asleep peacefully, without having regained consciousness in advance”, reads the family letter. The 79-year-old died on Monday. Dall, who lived in Hamburg-Eppendorf for a long time, left behind his wife, daughter and grandson. He has been married since 1971. The daughter lives in Canada with her grandson.

Composer and bartender

Karl Dall never went to acting school. He was born in Emden in February 1941 and grew up in Leer. Even at school he was noted as a class clown who liked to make up jokes. He once said in an interview that he simply had to “develop a sense of humor at an early age”: his classmates often teased him about his droopy eye due to a congenital weakness of the eyelid muscles. Dall’s father was the school principal, but academics weren’t for his son. He left school without a qualification in the 10th grade, learned to write and took pictures for the “Ostfriesen-Zeitung”. In 1963 he went to Berlin, where he worked as a bartender, extra, small actor and pusher.

Crazy and comical

From the end of the 1960s, Karl Dall bombed the Federal Republic with his jokes. As part of the Insterburg and Co. ranks, he became a star. After leaving the group of idiots in the late 1970s, Dall worked successfully on his solo career. He has moderated talk shows on television, has been live on stage, has been seen in the cinema, but mostly on television.

In the mid-1980s he presented the contingent hit “Dall-As” on private television – here he provoked his guests. In the 1990s, the comedian was a lure to “Get it funny”. But Dall also finished in the charts with hits like “This record is a hit” and “Millions of women love me”.

Allegations of rape and acquittal

In 2014 a scandal shook his life: Karl Dall was tried for rape in Switzerland. But he was acquitted, a stalker is said to have framed him.
