Moral Contract for the Holiday Season: Legault re-adjusts the shot

The “moral contract” for the holidays is changed again. François Legault no longer imposes a firm quarantine on Quebeckers who want to celebrate Christmas together.

The Prime Minister acknowledged Thursday that it is not easy to devise a procedure to allow citizens to feast for a while in this rather gloomy period. “It’s not black or white,” he agreed.

François Legault loosens the rules a bit for Quebeckers who will have no choice but to show up for work the week before Christmas and who cannot completely isolate themselves.

“If we stay at home, that’s for the best, but I understand perfectly well that there are many Quebecs who need, who have to work, the week before Christmas, then we need to talk about minimizing the risks. What does that mean? Basically, this means respect two extremely important instructions: always stay two meters from other people and then wear a mask when you are inside “.

And for workers whose work involves closeness to others, such as health workers and daytime educators, the Prime Minister asks them to exercise judgment.

“I cannot decree that they can go to meetings. It’s a question of risk, of risk management. And I am confident that all Quebec citizens will make the right decision, ”he insisted.

Earlier this week, François Legault had to correct for the first time the situation regarding the number of gatherings allowed to celebrate with friends or extended family. Citizens will finally be entitled to two festive evenings between 24 and 27 December.

The prime minister blamed Horacio Arruda’s team for explaining the confusion in the message.

“I admit, at the beginning of last week, public health told us about four days (of meetings). Then they said: two (gatherings during the four) days is better. So, from the beginning, I listened to public health, “he said.

François Legault and Dr Arruda also warned Thursday that this famous “moral contract” to celebrate Christmas could fall apart if the COVID-19 infection curve doesn’t weaken.

The epidemiological situation was not very encouraging on Thursday. Quebec has recorded a maximum of unreached cases per day since the start of the pandemic with 1,464 additional infections and 32 deaths.

“We will have a decision to make. For now, we are continuing with the plan, ”said François Legault.
