The Let’s Encrypt certification body has announced that starting from September 2021 at the latest, only new Android systems (version 7.1.1 or later) will be supported. Let’s Encrypt issues free security certificates so that computers and mobile phones can connect securely to websites. Such an encrypted connection is standard in many places today. This is also because Google prefers websites that offer a secure https connection.
50 million websites
The problem: Devices using an older version of Android will no longer be able to connect to websites and services using Let’s Encrypt from autumn 2021. According to the provider, this is over 50 million platforms worldwide. Up to five percent of the traffic on these websites comes from devices that will no longer be supported in the future.
The certification authority announced the move this month in a blog post. After all, there is a trick for users of older Android devices to still be able to visit affected websites from 2021.
Simple trick
“Installed the Firefox browser”, so the advice of the provider Let’s Encrypt. The browser can be installed on devices with Android version 5 or later. Security certificates can then be updated with the mobile browser regardless of the operating system. Affected websites can still be used after 2021. However, if you still have a device running Android 7.1.1, you should consider buying a new mobile phone.
