Microsoft estimates that the Xbox Series shortage could last until April 2021

Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S have been with us for almost a week and the truth is that the launch of both was a success, becoming the Xbox that sold the most units in its first 24 hours of “life”. Pre-orders for both machines opened on September 22 in most parts of the world, and demand was so high that most major stores sold out within minutes (especially for Xbox Series X).

Microsoft is currently working at full capacity to produce as many units as possible to satisfy all fans and enthusiasts who have not been able to get one. There are a lot of people waiting for their new console ahead of Christmas (a period of strong sales for consoles), but everything indicates that getting a new Xbox will be difficult in the coming months.

The Xbox Series shortage could last until the second quarter of 2021

Xbox CFO Tim Stuart admitted at the Jefferies Interactive Entertainment conference that while they try to produce as many units as possible, the truth is that it will take a while for supply to match demand:

I think we will continue to see supply shortages as we move into the post-Christmas quarter. And then, when we hit the fourth quarter, our entire supply chain continues at full capacity in the months leading up to the summer. And this is where I hope the offer meets the demand.

We will have a supply for the next 4, 5, 6 months. And that’s when I really hope to see the demand profile start being satisfied, which is going to be really interesting.

In that sense, Liz Hamren, also a prominent member of the Xbox team, acknowledged the Xbox Series shortage on launch day, encouraging those fans who were left without it to keep an eye on the stores:

We know not everyone has been able to get an Xbox Series X right away | We are working tirelessly with our partners around the world to bring as many new consoles as possible to as many of you as possible over time, and we invite you to register with directly from local resellers for more details on availability in your market.
