Mick Schumacher (Prema) missed his first Formula 2 title victory despite a strong fight to catch up, but he still has all the triumphs in hand.

Michael Schumacher’s son went from 18th to seventh in Bahrain in Red Bull Junior Yuki Tsunoda (Japan / Carlin) victory on Saturday, collecting six points.

Competitor Callum Ilott (UNI-Virtuosi) reached sixth place, which earned him eight points. However, as Schumacher led the fastest lap, he received two more points. This means that his 14-point lead before Sunday’s final race remains reassuring. The winner of Sunday’s race receives 15 points, the runner-up twelve.

Schumacher will start on Sunday from 2nd place

And thanks to his courageous performance, Schumacher starts the sprint from an excellent starting position. Because the eighth placed in the main race will start from pole thanks to Sunday’s reverse grid rule (13:20), and Schumacher will be seventh from second place. Ilott, like Schumacher, a young Ferrari driver, will be behind us.

Sixth place is enough for Schumacher to win the title on Sunday. If Ilott wins, but doesn’t lead the fastest lap, which still brings two points, even the seventh would be enough.

Schumacher makes his way forward

Schumacher completely missed the qualifications and had a collision in the process. “I have a good race pace, I will look from behind every opportunity that presents itself,” announced the 21-year-old – and he has used many in the race.

The German had to make his way and immediately faced some close duels, several times there was a slight contact with the competition. But Schumacher got away with it lightly. After a quarter of the race he had improved six places to 12th place, Ilott was still stuck in midfield, shortly after Schumacher appeared directly behind the title rival.

The English Ilott, who started from ninth position, returned to the pits and returned accordingly. Schumacher, with a different strategy, was one of the few drivers to fall by the wayside for a long time.

Only after 30 of the 48 laps did Schumacher change the tires, out of the points he climbed back to 12th place, Ilott was fifth at this point. The fresh tires allowed him to recover more positions. Furthermore, Schumacher set the fastest lap in the race and thus secured two extra points.
