Lewis Hamilton started the Imola Grand Prix in second place on the grid. He fell behind Max Verstappen in the first lap. However, he ultimately managed to win the race and record his 93rd victory in a Formula 1 race.
Andrew Shovlin, Mercedes F1’s on-board technical director answered some of the questions from fans in a post-race debrief. In the Youtube video, Andrew also explained Hamilton’s strategy which allowed him to win the race last weekend.
Lewis Hamilton’s winning strategy
Andrew explained that it was decided before the race itself that if Max comes behind them, they will have to react to Max Verstappen’s pit stop strategy. Therefore, as leader of the race, Valtteri Bottas finished first in reaction to Verstappen’s pit stop.
In this case, the best thing for Lewis Hamilton was to stay out for as long as possible. Try to make as much money as possible with those tires. Andrew explained, “If we had stopped him immediately, he would have gone after Valtteri and Max.”
He made it clear that there were two essential benefits of staying out and going longer. “The first is if there is a VSC or a safety car, then you take the lead. the other advantage is that the guys who stopped the fastest are on fresh rubber, if they move into an undercut, when the leading car stops, he stays behind. “
He explained that Valtteri was a bit slower due to the debris stuck under his car. As a result, Lewis was able to go faster than Valtteri and Max. He stayed out to build that pit stop gap needed to give up ahead of them.
The strategy worked perfectly when Lewis Hamilton received the perfect virtual safety car when Esteban Ocon had to retire due to transmission problems. The accident occurred just as Hamilton was approaching the entrance to the pits and some traffic on the lap.
This allowed him to maintain a comfortable lead as he retired to the front of the grid after his pit stop. Lewis Hamilton will be looking forward to bringing this freight momentum to Istanbul next weekend. A victory at the Turkish Grand Prix will secure him the 2020 Drivers’ World Championship.
