Manizales, with a high rate of active cases due to covid-19

Fernando Cañón is a trader in Manizales. He says he lives waiting for the covid figures of the city. He is uncomfortable because he believes that the number of accumulated active cases appears very high compared to those cured. Explain the reason: “I think they are not removing all the recovered ones from the list”.

The report on Tuesday night indicates that the city has reached 9,150 confirmed coronaviruses, of which 6,291 are still active, 121 dead and 2,750 recovered. The man illustrates his situation: “I was positive, I passed the quarantine and I recovered. It’s the time they didn’t call me to find out how I’m doing or if I’m dead. And the new test was negative ”.

The balance sheet data corresponds to a mathematical operation which consists in subtracting the deceased and recovered from those confirmed. Caldas, including its capital, amasses 14,179 cases and 7,966 assets.

Juan Diego López is an epidemiologist with the Municipal Health Secretariat and acknowledges that Manizales appears to be recovering. It indicates that these ratios correspond to recoveries that the city, as in general in the department, are nominal. He explains: “The nominal means that we have recovered the cases one by one with consultation, virtual or telephone, to evaluate that person and declare them cured.”

López outlines another way of accounting for those who have been recovered. “Other times and in other places we talk about being healed in a different way. For example, it says: if the person has had an illness for more than 15 days and has not died or is complicated, then he is already cured. It is a criterion that is not nominal, it is statistical ”.

He comments that both calculations are made for Manizales. The nominal value for the case of the closing on Tuesday evening was 2,795 recovered. And for the statistical trainee, he expresses that there is one in 6,100, which corresponds to people with more than 15 days of symptoms and are neither dead nor complicated.

The epidemiologist concludes: “At this moment in the situational analysis of every day and night. Manizales has good monitoring to make an impact on people’s consciences ”.

For the trader and many of his colleagues, this treatment leads people to feel greater fear. “I am still worried that many people leave without heeding the recommendations and see crowds in Cyprus and Milan.”

In the INS

The Istituto Superiore di Sanità, INS, has two ways to accept that a positive case passes to cured. One is for testing, which is when the PCR test is negative and another for time, which is when a positive without complications is considered negative 15 or 30 days after the onset of symptoms. The latter report is done automatically and the patient is not tested.

Taking this form of reporting into account, according to the INS, there are 9,955 confirmed cases in Manizales, of which 132 deaths and 7697 cases recovered, with a deadline of 2 November. This would mean that there are 2,126 active cases for the INS in Manizales.

By PCR, 302 people were diagnosed with healing and with the 7395 time modality. For example, the first person named as healed by the time method was a 36-year-old woman who started symptoms on May 27 and her date of recovery dates back to 29 June.
