The feeling in the final minutes can hardly be deceived: Lugano could have lived well with a draw against FCB. But why do you only get one point with you when your opponent invites 3? With the same ingenuity as the Basler defense at the last minute, Ticino almost had to strike. And that’s what they did in the 92nd minute (with 2 minutes of recovery):

  • After a high ball in midfield, Mattia Bottani wins the aerial duel against FCB youngster Albian Hajdari.
  • Then things move quickly: the ball reaches Jens Odgaard, who catches the Basel defenders on the wrong foot.
  • Eray Cömert can no longer prevent Odgaard from passing to Bottani. The latter cannot be asked twice and leaves Heinz Lindner no chance at close range.

A winning aerial duel was enough for Lugano to knock out the FCB defense. Both defensive ranks had previously made a solid impression. Cornaredo’s game was mainly played in midfield, scoring opportunities were rare.

Basel closer to the gate

Especially after the break, FCB has developed slight advantages. This could not transform the team of coach Ciriaco Sforza into a blow. The best chance was missed by Ricky van Wolfswinkel, who took too long to graduate in the 76th minute after a well-tried free-kick variant from the best position.

In the first half Andrea Padula was also ahead in FCB. The 24-year-old has crowned a nice combination with Julian von Moos but not with his first Super League goal.

Lugano can no longer lose

Thanks to the late Lucky Punch, Lugano was able to expand two series. On the one hand, Ticino are 16 matches unbeaten. Coach Maurizio Jacobacci’s team, on the other hand, has always scored at least one goal in their last 16 Super League matches.

The 1-0 against FCB was Lugano’s fourth win of the season in the eighth game. This means that the “bianconeri” remain the first pursuer of Leader YB. The Bernese won with confidence in Lausanne.

Lugano will continue next Sunday with a guest presence in Sion. On Saturday, Basel welcomes the Servette.
