The government announced last week that, following discussions with representatives of the Romanian cultural-artistic sector, it was decided to implement a state aid scheme worth € 100 million in the form of grants.
“I learned that the Ministry of Culture, with the support of the Romanian government, has developed a draft state aid scheme to support the cultural sector, whose activities have been stopped to prevent the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. I was surprised to discover that artists are not included in the government plan “, specify the 95 signatories of the letter addressed to the Prime Minister, the Deputy Prime Minister and the Minister of Culture.
According to the text of the letter, “I have noticed that they are aimed only at cultural operators, organizers of festivals and cultural events, organizers of musical events and cabarets, ticket sellers, booksellers and publishers, artists not being included in any of these measures” .
They believe “that the existence of the cultural sector depends not only on the organizers of the event, but above all on the artists. Please include this entity in the state aid scheme as an eligible beneficiary of the amounts intended to help the cultural sector”.

Bogdan Gheorghiu, Minister of Culture, explained: “We will condition these funds in such a way that the money is spent so that the beneficiaries are from a pyramid point of view all those who work in the respective cultural sector. Because there are third professions linked to each “We will make sure that when we finance an event organizer, the money reaches the artists, when we finance the bookstores or publishing houses, the money will reach the authors as well”.
The beneficiaries of the state aid scheme in support of the cultural sector are private law entities that have had activities in the last 2 years in the performing arts, visual arts, heritage, books, audiovisual and cultural education.
In order to benefit from this aid, all entities must register in the cultural sector register, on the one hand, in order to know exactly the financial impact and, at the same time, as a condition for pre-registration when applying for these grants. . Registrations can be made up to and including 25 November.
