Lewis Hamilton a fantastic ambassador deserves a knighthood: Damon Hill

Lewis Hamilton has broken down barriers since arriving in Formula 1 and deserves a knight title for his achievements on and off the track, former world champion Damon Hill said.

Hamilton, the most successful grand prix driver of all time and the only black driver in F1, sealed a record seventh world title with his victory in Turkey this month, fueling the expectations of a rider.

The 35-year-old Brit, who comes from a disadvantaged multiracial background, used his platform to campaign for racial equality, diversity and sustainability.

“Lewis has always broken down barriers, by the time he got into F1 or even karting he was breaking barriers and challenging the status quo,” the Guardian said, quoting Hill.

“The knighthood will be seen as recognition not only for his riding, but also as a black driver who has opened another door for anyone who is not white.

“It destroyed the preconception that it cannot be done, that there is an area where you cannot achieve something because of the color of your skin. It completely destroyed that idea.”

Stirling Moss, Jack Brabham and Jackie Stewart are the other Formula One drivers to have been knighted. Hamilton received an MBE in 2008.

“It’s a very rare thing in our sport to get a knighthood,” said Hill, who won the world championship in 1996. “It’s also a recognition of his stance on equality, anti-racism and environmental issues.

“He’s blunt, he’s playing his part and he’s using his fame for positive purposes. He’s a fantastic ambassador and having a knighthood will only increase his opportunities to do that job.”
