Les Reines Prochaines: “I can’t understand why culture is so cheap”

It’s a sad picture on Thursday evening, December 3, at the Basel Theater. The Basel women’s collective “Les Reines Prochaines” is broadcasting the premiere of the opera “Alte Tiere Hochgestapelt” on the big stage. However, there are only 15 people in the audience. Tickets were drawn.

“Of course it makes a difference”

The cult band from Basel has been on the stages of Europe for over 30 years. In their career, the “friends” have already worked on many projects and trainings and have experimented a lot. However, this experience goes beyond what has been there. “Whether we play in front of 15 or 850 people naturally makes a difference. We often performed in front of a small audience, but the rooms were also smaller, ”says Fränzi Madörin of Les Reines Prochaines.

Really let off steam

And this even if it’s really happening on stage. Les Reines Prochaines, who usually organized their projects entirely by themselves, were able to let off steam with the support of the theater. “You told us to make full use of it. So now we have a podium, moving stages, different materials and much more, ”says Chris Regn of the main collective.

Is culture worth so little?

Les Reines Prochaines cannot take away the joy of being on stage. Yet the current situation is extremely stressful for artists. “I’m not exactly a Corona skeptic. But how can it be that consumption continues and culture is closed? How is it that you can touch every part of H&M and we here, who put every costume in an ozone cabinet before it goes into other hands, have to accept those restrictions? ”Says Fränzi Madörin.
