There are two types of mouth ulcers:

Simple mouth ulcers: These can appear three or four times a year and last up to a week. Anyone can develop simple mouth ulcers, but they usually occur in people between the ages of 10 and 20.

Complex oral ulcers: These are less common and occur more often in people who have had them before.

Causes of mouth ulcers

The exact cause of most mouth ulcers is unknown, and slight stress or injury within the mouth is thought to be the cause of simple mouth ulcers.

Certain foods, including citrus or acidic fruits and vegetables (like lemons, oranges, pineapples, apples, figs, tomatoes, and strawberries), can cause mouth ulcers or make the problem worse.

The use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen, is another common cause.

Sometimes, a sharp tooth surface or dental appliance, such as braces or ill-fitting dentures, can also cause sores.

Some cases of complex ulcers appear in patients with immune system diseases, including lupus, Behçet’s disease, inflammatory bowel disease (including celiac disease, ulcerative colitis, and Crohn’s disease) and AIDS.

Mouth ulcers also appear in patients who have nutritional problems, such as a deficiency of vitamin B12, zinc, folic acid, or iron.
