In a virtual – yet international – ceremony the 2020 Latin Grammys awarded the best exponents of Latin music this Thursday evening.
Under the motto “Music humanizes us”, the gala took advantage of the virtual nature of the ceremony to change scenery, jumping between the various cities.
Artists from Madrid, Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro, Guadalajara, San Juan and, as headquarters, Miami participated.
Various presentations highlighted the current pandemic crisis, in particular the Pitbull song, “I Believe That We Will Win”, dedicated to health workers at the forefront of the fight against the coronavirus.
One of the most coveted awards, that of Best song of the year, went to the Puerto Rican resident with “René”, a sectarian issue in which he addresses his mental health, among other things.
In his thank you speech, the singer urged colleagues to focus more on the art of making music rather than the numbers that determine success.
“Art was not created to set records, we are not in the Olympics,” he said, while urging to reduce the obsession with social networks.
Some Notable Winners:
Song of the Year: “René”, resident
Record of the year: “With you”, Alejandro Sanz
Album of the year: “A Song for Mexico, Vol.1”, Natalia Lafourcade
Best New Artist: Mike bay
Best Pop Song: “Tu tu”, Camilo and Pedro Capó
Best Rock Song: “Biutiful”, Mon Laferte
Best Pop / Rock Song: “The Song of the Beasts”, Fito Páez
Best Rap / Hip Hop Song: “Before the World Ends”, Resident
Best Alternative Song: “En Cantos”, Ile and Natalia Lafourcade
Best Salsa Album: “40”, Niche Group
The night was filled with memorable performances across the diverse spectrum of Latin music, including Mexican, tropical and reggaeton genres.
There was also a special tribute to the late salsa legend, Héctor Lavoe.
While many veterans of music have been awarded, including Carlos Vives, Rosalía, Natalia Lafourcade, Bad Bunny and Alejandro Sanz, there has also been recognition of new artists who have won for the first time, including Mike Bahía.
