China launched the unmanned spaceship called “Chang’e 5”, which means “God of the Moon”, to the moon on November 24 to collect samples from the moon.
The Long March-5 Y5 missile, carrying the Chang’e 5 probe with a total take-off mass of 8.2 tons, was launched and sent the Change’e-5 probe into Earth-Moon orbit.
China’s National Space Administration announced that Chang’e 5 has successfully landed at 51.8 degrees west longitude and 43.1 degrees north latitude of the moon.
2 KILOGRAMS OF SAMPLES WILL BE COLLECTED
The probe aims to collect about 2 kilograms of rock and soil samples from the Moon. The spacecraft, which will return to Earth, is expected to land in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, Siziwang Banner in China.
China’s National Space Administration said it was the country’s first attempt to collect samples from the Moon for the Change’e-5 vehicle. If the Chinese spacecraft fulfills its intended mission, the first country to send spacecraft to the moon in 1959 will be the third country to bring samples from the moon, after the Soviet Union and the United States.
