Lance Stroll’s first shocking pole position in F1 was confirmed by the Turkish GP commissioners after the Racing Point driver was cleared in a post-qualifying investigation into the yellow flags.
The stewards worried after qualifying if Stroll slowed down enough for the yellow flags waved once in the final minutes of his pole-winning Q3 when teammate Sergio Perez crashed off the track at Turn seven.
But after speaking to Stroll and evaluating Racing Point’s telemetry data, they determined that the Canadian had followed the rules.
“With the telemetry, the car 18 clearly pulled off the accelerator, entered a corner and then accelerated as it pulled away from the crash,” reads a statement from the commissioners.

“Sector times don’t show this clearly as the track was drying quickly and each lap was faster than the previous lap.”
McLaren’s Lando Norris, who qualified 11th on a disappointing Saturday for the British squad, also faced stewards over an alleged yellow flag violation in Q1 when Nicholas Latifi spun with Williams.
The stewards have yet to rule on that incident.
Sainz penalized for Perez’s block
Meanwhile, in a further investigation on Saturday night, the stewards handed McLaren’s Carlos Sainz a three-spot drop on the grid for stopping Racing Point’s Sergio Perez during Q2.
The penalty drops Sainz to 16th on Sunday’s starting grid.
The commissioners established: “Auto 55 [Sainz] it came out of the pits as Auto 11 [Perez] it passed Turn 1. Car 11 reached Cab 55 in Turn 2/3 and was unnecessarily impeded by Car 55 at that point and several subsequent turns.

“While the extraordinary track conditions clearly affected the situation, radio communications from the team clearly warned car 55 that car 11 was behind him.”
Sainz also had a penalty point added to his super license, the first for the Spaniard in the past 12 months.
