The United States Department of Health and Human Services and the American Society of Nephrology are offering awards of up to $ 10 million for innovations in artificial kidney development.
According to a press release, the KidneyX Artificial Kidney Prize competition represents KidneyX’s first effort focused primarily on advancing the development of artificial kidneys with the goal of moving towards testing efficacy and reliability in human clinical trials.

“KidneyX is developing a community of innovators with the experience and vision to create a paradigm shift in kidney care: the public-private partnership is on track to promote catalytic change to improve kidney health, and most importantly, achieve results that are important to patients, their caregivers and those who love them ” John Sedor, MD, FASN, KidneyX’s steering committee chairman, said in the statement. “The Artificial Kidney Prize is committed to supporting multidisciplinary teams in proposing solutions that increase survival and restore quality of life for people with kidney failure.”

The release states that by following the goals outlined in the Technology Roadmap for Innovative Approaches to Renal Replacement Therapy, HHS and ASN hope to transform currently available dialysis methods by providing new continuous renal replacement therapies.
“The KidneyX Artificial Kidney Prize aims to radically improve kidney care by bringing together innovators in areas of expertise, including nephrology, bioengineering, materials science, regenerative medicine and medical devices,” said the HHS Secretary Alex Azar he said in the release.
The competition is open to both US and international entrants, with a jury recommending up to eight winners, according to the release.
“Innovative transformative steps towards an artificial kidney are critical to achieving the goals of the President’s Advancing American Kidney Health initiative and helping the millions of Americans with kidney disease who have been neglected for too long,” Azar said.
