“To all people struggling with this, know that you are not alone.”
Keke Palmer is talking about his experience with polycystic ovary syndrome and acne in the hopes that it will make others feel less alone.
Keke posted a lengthy note on Instagram about his diagnosis, which affects 1 in 10 women, and the resulting acne that doctors have been losing for years, to let people know they “didn’t agree” and shouldn’t be “afraid to show. [themselves] in the world.”
“Hey guys, for some of you this might be TMI, but for me my platform has always been used for much bigger things than me,” Keke wrote. “Polycystic Ovary Syndrome has been attacking me from the inside out all my life and I had no idea.”
“My acne was so bad that people in my field offered to pay for me to get it fixed. I tried EVERYTHING. I did Accutane TWICE. People say drink water, have a better diet, but I did. all of this, I ate all the “right” things, my blood tests were fine “.
“It took me to take a personal look at my family who has a history of diabetes and obesity to understand what was really going on with me.”
Keke had to figure out her diagnosis on her own because the doctors weren’t helping her reach her. “Unfortunately doctors are people and if you don’t ‘look the part’ they might not think it’s your problem,” he explained. “They might not even suggest it if you ‘look healthy’ whatever that means! I came to a weeping doctor once and all they offered was a measles vaccine … That’s right.”
“I’m posting this to say it’s okay and we can help ourselves. My skin made me sad many nights but I’m not giving up. I know it’s not me and my body has been looking for help.”
“I don’t have a medical degree but I did the research and took what I learned to a doctor and it led them to a correct diagnosis. I’m not saying you trust WebMD for everything haha but what I’m saying is that no one can help us as we can help ourselves “.
“This makes me especially sad because my family has struggled for years and no doctor could help them, they actually trick them and just take their money.”
“It is only thanks to what my family has sacrificed that it also allows me to have the resources to share the information I share with you! Their struggle for poverty has given me a better life and I just want to share what I learn.”
Keke ended his note by sending encouragement to everyone else dealing with polycystic ovary syndrome. “The least harmful thing PCOS can bring is acne,” he wrote. “To all the people struggling with this, know that you are not alone and that you are still so fucking good! MY ACNE HAS NEVER STOPPED ME.”
“But we don’t have to accept it … Pray for me on this journey and I will pray for you too. I’m not afraid to show myself to the world and neither should you be ❤️”
