Jurgen Klopp says he welcomes the news that Liverpool fans may be allowed to return to Anfield next month.
The Reds boss, however, admits he is “struggling to put faith” in the government’s announcement that as many as 4,000 could watch live matches in Premier League stadiums since December.
On Monday, Prime Minister Boris Johnson revealed a “ winter plan ” aimed at tackling the coronavirus pandemic over the next few months.
Some of the proposals will see fans allowed to return to stadiums with reduced capacity, if the respective area falls into a first or second level category.
If the stadium in question falls within a tier one area, 4,000 fans will be allowed to return, or up to 50% of the stadium’s capacity, whichever is less.
This means Anfield may be able to reopen its doors to followers starting next month, but while Klopp is pleased with the news, he admitted some trepidation over developments.
“I don’t think it’s unfair [that some clubs will be able to return fans and some won’t]”Klopp said on Tuesday in the preview of Wednesday’s Champions League game with Atalanta at Anfield.
“The rules depend on different areas. The problem I have right now is that I have a hard time putting my faith in any kind of announcement.
“And I don’t understand why now we would have 2,000 people in a 60,000-person stadium and 2,000 people in a 9,000-person stadium.
“But I’m not surprised it wasn’t finally thought of, to be honest.
“But it’s good news, a good sign, and I take it 100 percent.
“I don’t think it’s unfair, it’s just the situation. It’s the world right now and we can’t change that kind of thing.”

Following the government announcement, Liverpool said they will continue to liaise with key partners in the city to ensure people can return to Anfield safely.
A statement read: “Liverpool Football Club welcomes the government’s announcement of the proposed return of fans to sports stadiums.
“We missed our fans a lot at Anfield and we can’t wait to welcome them again when it is safe to do so.
“We will continue to work with our city partners, including the City of Liverpool, the Merseyside Police and Spirit of Shankly, to establish the most up-to-date health guide and the most effective process for the safe return of supporters.
“While we await confirmation of the level at which the city of Liverpool will be placed, we continue to work on our plans and will make further announcements in due course.”
