Junior de Barranquilla is debated by some, because his football is not filling up and coach Luis Amaranto Perea is in the spotlight, despite his silent work having paid off. This Thursday, the curramba team qualified for the quarter-finals of the Copa Sudamericana 2020, after eliminating Unión La Calera on penalties, as a guest in Chile and with two sent off.
It is certainly not the team of elegance and strength of other years; It is not the most luxurious and fake; but it is a practical, combative, serious team which, for the moment, is achieving good results. Furthermore, they are the only Colombian team in international competitions, after the debacle in Copa Libertadores and the flurry of eliminations in South America.
And although it is criticized and resisted, the shark has the luxury over the other Colombian teams, who in the auction of the year have nothing more to play, or try to save the campaign with the title in the Colombian League, as well as with a classification a Libertadores or South American.
Junior is the only team alive in three competitions: Sudamericana, Copa Colombia and La Liga. Neither América, Nacional, Millonarios or Santa Fe, to name a few examples, can say the same.
And, without counting the Liguilla – which is an invention of Dimayor for the eliminated and therefore respect other sponsors and contracts -, only América and Deportes Quindío compete in two tournaments: the scarlet is alive in the League and the Cup; while also competing in Copa Colombia and in the Ascent Tournament.
So, in the midst of the Colombian football crisis and its mediocrity, it is worth saving what Junior did, a team that has invested and is the only one that has won something this year: the Super League. How far will it go?
